For over two decades, Uttarayana Foundation has brought healthcare, hope, and opportunity to Uttarakhand’s most vulnerable communities through rural health services, preventive care, cardiac treatment, girl-child empowerment, and emergency support.

Dr. O. P. Yadava

Bringing specialist care and opportunity to Himalayan communities

Dr. O. P. Yadava is the founder of Uttarayana Faith Foundation, combining a career in cardiac surgery with a longstanding commitment to underserved communities in Uttarakhand. He serves as CEO and Chief Cardiac Surgeon at National Heart Institute, New Delhi, and Director of the All India Heart Foundation.

His community service has its roots in the free roadside consultations and medical outreach that began in Kasardevi, Almora, in 1999. With the Foundation’s formal registration in 2013, these efforts developed into an organised programme of rural healthcare, preventive health, cardiac treatment and social support.

Under his leadership, and with support from National Heart Institute, this work has grown to include Uttarayana Hospital in Papersahily, Almora, specialist outreach and Health on Wheels, whose mobile clinic reaches 100 remote villages. His commitment extends to education through Nai-Umang, launched in 2021, which has supported 42 girls from Balika Sadan, Almora, towards higher education, skills and independent living.

Dr. Yadava completed his medical education and postgraduate surgical training at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, before serving in the Armed Forces as a Surgical Specialist. He trained in cardiothoracic surgery at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, followed by advanced training in Australia and Japan, covering adult and paediatric cardiac surgery.

Across more than four decades, his surgical experience spans over 20,000 heart operations. He pioneered Total Arterial Myocardial Revascularisation in India in 1992, with particular expertise in beating-heart bypass surgery, repeat cardiac operations and myocardial revascularisation in women.

His contributions have been recognised with the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in 2006. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Cardiology Today, and has been elected President-Elect (2029) of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS).

Through Uttarayana, Dr. Yadava continues to connect specialist medical expertise with village communities, helping families access treatment closer to home and supporting young women towards independent futures.

Amid COVID-19, Dr. Yadav offered the state hospital space, ventilators, and equipped ambulances to support underserved areas.

The region's first dedicated cardiac facility opened at Almora base hospital, treating over 5,000 patients in its first year.

Diagnosed with two heart defects at a Foundation camp, four-year-old Suhani received free surgery in Delhi within days. She is now home and healthy.

Girls from Almora's Balika Niketan received professional training in Delhi under Nai-Umang, fully supported by the Foundation. Several have since found employment.

"My son Ayansh was born with a hole in his heart. We found out in 2017, and for four or five years we went from hospital to hospital in Uttarakhand without getting treatment. On the advice of Dr Nishank ji, we came to the National Heart Institute, and within two days my son's surgery was done, completely free. My request to the Uttarakhand government is to bring facilities like this to the state itself, so families like ours don't have to travel so far. My son is completely healthy today, and I am grateful to Dr O P Yadav, Mahipal ji, and the whole team."
